Playing sport and doing regular exercise is great for your health and well being, but sometimes injuries happen. Our aim is to treat your injury and ensure that you regain your movement and strength so that you can resume sporting activity as quickly as possible.

Types of sports injury
Some common types of sports injuries that we treat here at the Practice include:

  • sprains and strains, muscle tears and ligament damage
  • swelling of a tendon (tendonitis or tendonosis)
  • treatment for the rehabilitation of broken bones
  • cartilage damage
  • soft tissue injuries

Your doctor or physiotherapist may refer to your sports injury as:

  • a sudden injury – where damage happens as a result of a sudden impact or an awkward movement
  • an overuse injury – where an injury occurs over time due to overusing certain parts of the body. Children are most at risk of developing an overuse injury. This is because their bodies are still growing, which can make their bones, muscles and joints more vulnerable to damage.

What to do if you have an injury

Stop exercising if you feel pain, regardless of whether your sports injury happened suddenly or you’ve had the pain for a while.

If a particular movement or activity hurts, stop doing it and get medical help. Continuing to exercise while you’re injured may cause further damage and slow your recovery time.

If you get a severe injury while doing a sporting activity, such as a painful swelling that is almost instantaneous and close to a bony area i.e. wrist or ankle, this may indicate that you have damaged or fractured a bone. If you have a deep cut or concussion from a blow to the head, go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department immediately.

If the injury does not require immediate medical attention but causes severe pain, swelling or numbness, or if you cannot place any weight on the affected area, go to your GP, local NHS walk-in centre or chartered physiotherapist.

Treating sports injuries

Most minor sports injuries can be treated using self-care techniques, such as:

  • Resting the affected body part
  • Using over-the-counter medication, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, to relieve symptoms of pain and swelling
  • Using ice packs to begin to relieve pain and reduce swelling.

More serious sports injuries, such as a broken bone or severely damaged cartilage, may require surgery or a plaster cast to help repair the injury.

They can successfully treat your problem, following the key processes below:

Firstly, we will assess and diagnose your injury. We will then develop a personalised treatment plan which may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, strapping and /or taping or electrotherapy via ultrasound, to facilitate your recovery.

An individualised exercise programme will be recommended which will increase your flexibility, strength and stability. We will show you how to move properly and include functional exercises which you can incorporate throughout your daily routine.

Once you are on the road to recovery we may ask you to increase the level of exercises by increasing their frequency, duration and speed. We may get you to do pool or gym based exercises to ensure that you exercise the rest of your body and also maintain your fitness. We may look at your training regimes, introduce sport specific exercises, perhaps even suggest Pilates.

Finally, our ultimate aim is also to prevent recurrence of your injury. We will recommend preventative measures and the best way to manage the injury if it breaks down in the future.

Physiotherapy treatment will help you regain the use of the injured limb more quickly.

Preventing sports injuries

Of course not all sports injuries can be prevented, but you can reduce your risk of getting injured by:

  • Warming up and stretching properly before you exercise
  • Not pushing your body beyond your current fitness level
  • Using recommended safety equipment for specific sports, such as shin guards for football or a gum shield for rugby
  • If you start doing a new sport or activity, get advice, exercises and training from a qualified Chartered Physiotherapist or sports coach.
